New Underage Administration

The administration of underage rugby up to now has been managed understandably by the adult parent body and no management structure had ever been put in place to specifically address the ‘underaged’.  That’s not to say they were neglected in any way – in fact the opposite was the case – largely through the dedication of a select group of members and parents who looked after their needs at every turn. But time marches on and suddenly there was an acceptance from the underage ‘mentors’ for a more formalised administration to oversee the entire underage rugby structure in the Club. This historic meeting took place on Wed 25 August – in its own right a regular pre-season meeting to identify Coaching personnel for the different underage groups – but somehow in the throes of the various discussions and the many points being raised, the newly appointed Skibbereen Youth Officer Niall Hurley broached the subject of an underage administration to look after all kids from 6 – 19 and it was warmly received. On the rebound Niall Hurley accepted the nomination as interim Chairman and so the underage ‘came of age’ and will now hold regular monthly meeting and in time appoint their own Officers - until such time as a formal AGM is convened and all interested can attend and compete for  positions. This was a very positive and very welcome step and is firmly endorsed by the adult management committee – and the President Tom Walsh was in attendance and conveyed that very message when congratulating Niall Hurley on his appointment.

The new administration will in time be able to identify the many areas of common interest between the underage groups and formulate their own policy in addressing them – the areas immediately coming to mind are promoting the introduction of new Mini and Underage Coaches, upgrading and up-skilling existing Coaches, team sponsorship, match gear and Club merchandising, parental involvement at matches/training as well as organising social occasions, fundraising etc. etc. – the list is endless – and we wish Niall and his team every success.
